Usually I hate such discussions but your article was different, so it was like a relief to read that! :)

I'd love to keep in touch with you and talk or discuss some more issues..fairytalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13459698350446294411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473166537823294555.post-78154808455010582642009-05-28T10:29:59.688-04:002009-05-28T10:29:59.688-04:00I think those are good points, Fairytale. One thi...I think those are good points, Fairytale. One thing that I would point out is that these two posts are based on the supposition that fetuses have the same moral standing as regular people do. That is a very controversial assumption in thinking about the abortion issue, as many people believe that fetuses (especially in the early stages) do not have moral standing at all, or at least do not have the same moral standing as regular people. But that's an issue I think is better left to other people; I haven't the stomach for those kinds of questions.

I would be honored to have my work used in your lessons; if you're really interested in exploring this subject with your students, you might also be interested in checking out Judith Thomson's essay, "A Defense of Abortion" and Joel Feinberg's response, "Abortion." Both are classics on this subject, and are undoubtedly more important than my work here :-P

But in any case, I'm really glad you enjoyed the articles, and I wish you the best of luck in working towards becoming a teacher.Dannyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14933199894935324897noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473166537823294555.post-83709321540871640262009-05-28T09:13:32.011-04:002009-05-28T09:13:32.011-04:00Now that I've read the follow up post, I have to c...Now that I've read the follow up post, I have to comment on that!

Linda enters the room on a voluntary basis and she knows about the possibility that she might end tied up to a lasso and has to decide whether she wants to let the Glue Man die or not.
Taking responsibilty or not.
(I leave the case of rape out)

I think this whole abortion thing is about responsibility.
I mean, if you have sex without a condom (which is dangerous enough, considering aids and hiv)or any contraceptives and don't want to get pregnant, is that stupid enough. And it shows that this person can't take responsibility neither for herself nor an unborn child.

What I've learned about this is.. If you are not wise enough to be aware of all the things that can happen and all the responsibilities that might attach you, then you should play and have fun outside the dark room.

If I am (hopefully in 2015) an english teacher and this topic will ever occur in my lessons, I would like to send these young people on their way with your article of the Glue Man.
If that is okay with you!

I also really enjoyed reading the part 2!
Thank you!.fairytalehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13459698350446294411noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473166537823294555.post-51937545648526095082008-02-16T16:49:00.000-05:002008-02-16T16:49:00.000-05:00Sounds like a good time. But I was happy to actually see an article by Walter Block (on drugs, if I recall) in the classroom. First time an Austrian had come up (I'm minoring in philosophy) in any of my classes, and I'd taken Econ 101. My professor didn't really discuss the article like we'd done with the other writings. Instead he just ranted about how much he hated it (but he admitted that he was just ranting, not arguing). I don't seem to recall their being a class discussion, either. Damn professors nowadays.

Anyways, cheerio, mate.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16936490759627349307noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473166537823294555.post-75814849279737470062008-02-16T15:04:00.000-05:002008-02-16T15:04:00.000-05:00Yes, it was Introductory Ethics. Someone who doesn't exist can't experience anything. Therefore, it can't be unpleasant to not exist.Danny Shaharhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16781136797017833336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2473166537823294555.post-88348525229492517182008-02-16T12:31:00.000-05:002008-02-16T12:31:00.000-05:00You said, "If she misses the pressure sensitive bo...You said, "If she misses the pressure sensitive board, the glue man doesn't even come to life; Linda can go about her business without any real guilt."

I disagree. Being unconscious blows. She has a moral obligation to bring that glue-dude into being. Yeah, I said it: Abstinence is immoral.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16936490759627349307noreply@blogger.com
